[REVIEW] Lucky Dumplings, Great Neck, NY

It was such a joy to see all of my friends again the other night, when we convened for the first time in far too long for dinner at Lucky Dumplings in Great Neck, NY.  I had gotten takeout from Lucky Dumplings a few weeks prior, shortly after their Grand Opening, and was so impressed that I implored my friends to join me for a formal Chinese Quest review!  I was anxious to hear what they thought, as the last few restaurants we visited had been a little disappointing.  Would history repeat itself?  Or were we going to get LUCKY tonight?

Lucky Dumplings is located at 19 Northern Blvd., Great Neck, NY 11021.  It’s directly across the street from Moonstone, and just east of Sweet Wonton.  There is metered street parking until 7:00 PM, or a small lot around the back.

The location should be familiar, as in the past it was home to Coco’s Palace, which closed due to COVID-19.  But that was then, and this is now.  The interior is modern and simple, with an open view of the kitchen and a few tables. The staff was very warm and welcoming.  They appear to do a brisk takeout business as well.  Let’s get down to what we were here for, though, as apparently we were very hungry!

We started with what I took out: Sweet Corn & Water Chestnut Pork Wontons 玉米马蹄鲜 – These are SOOOOO good.  They are spicy, so if that isn’t your jam, check out the other dumplings we ordered below.  Ten wontons are in the serving, and as there were five of us, two each was a perfect start to our meal.  You’ll like these.  I guarantee it!

Next up were Garlic Spare Ribs 蒜香排骨 – To us, these were tasty, but kind of dry.  Nonetheless, we made short work of the ribs.  We wouldn’t recommend this dish.  In all fairness, we were hoping to order Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs, but they were off the menu that day.  I bet those would have been good!

Hoping our next dish would get us back on track.  Onion & Beef Dumplings (Pan-Fried) 圆葱牛肉 – BOOM!  We were back to being happy diners.  These were excellent and are a good alternative to the spicy wontons.  Fried to just the right level of crispiness, and the filling was plentiful and delicious.

Hoping to keep our LUCKY streak going now, with our next dish, Sesame Dan Dan Noodles 麻酱担担面 – this is the first time we have ever had Dan Dan Noodles that didn’t have minced pork in it.  These noodles were so good and so refreshing.  Served on the cool side, they were so refreshing and helped offset the spiciness of the other dishes.  Another recommended dish.

Up next were Scallion Pancakes 葱油饼 – I was hoping that there was an option to have them with beef and hoisin sauce, but this was the only option.  Despite my hope, they were perfect.  Very light and tasty.  A nice addition to our feast.

Last, and certainly not least, was Garlic Sauce Eggplant & Chicken 鱼香茄子鸡 – So YUMMY delicious!  The chicken was like butter going down.  So smooth.  This made me feel happy.  And LUCKY!

Add on five white rice bowls and five cans of soda ($2.00 each), and the total bill was only $114.00!!
