They were where families celebrated birthdays, where teenagers learned to use chopsticks on awkward dates, where Jewish families gathered every Christmas Eve, and where the American Dream was served with pork fried rice and a side of duck sauce. Today, in 2026, the landscape looks very different. Some beloved classics endure, some have reinvented themselves, and others have vanished entirely—leaving behind only memories, menus tucked in kitchen drawers, and the faint scent of sesame oil that seems to linger in the collective imagination. Long Island’s Chinese restaurants are not disappearing. They are transforming. Last night, my Meetup Group, Meet & Eat, and Make New Friends (Nassau County / Western Suffolk County), met for dinner at O Mandarin in Hicksville, NY, to celebrate the Chinese (Lunar) New Year.  We ushered in the Year of the Horse.  Gung Hay Fat Choy!!  O Mandarin is located at 600 W Old Country Rd, Hicksville, NY 11801. The food was extraordinary, and the celebration of the Chinese New Year, Year of the Horse, was festive!

Jiang Nan, a new Chinese restaurant, that opened in Syosset, which adds to the Jiang Nan dynasty with locations in all of the chichi, tory, upscale dining establishments on the Gold Coast of Long Island. O Mandarin, in Hicksville, NY, opened a year and a half ago. We dined there a year ago. And now we are prepared to tell you the story of their magnificent Chinese restaurant. They have a sister restaurant, by the same name, in Hartsdale, NY, which has been packing in dining patrons for years. From all of the wood, and some of the Chefs and Wait Staff, that were imported from China, no expense was spared in its construction nor in it's food. Grand Opening: Kai Burgers & Dumplings in Great Neck Plaza, NY 11021 Asian fusion, hamburgers and dumplings obviously, and also Keto dishes, beef dishes too, oh my! The restaurant looks very modern and has a full bar and two large-screen televisions. We think you are going to like it. We wish Kai Burger & Dumplings lots of luck.  Let's all do our part as we come out of the pandemic and let's show our support of local businesses too.

Our latest Quest took us to the newly opened Dun Huang in Syosset, NY. This Chinese restaurant offers Shaanxi cuisine from Northwest China. If you like your food spicy and from a rarely eaten cuisine in the United States, we highly recommend giving it a try.
