I’m generally not much of a fan of buffets, especially Asian ones. Perhaps it’s because I’ve been disappointed far more often than elated, but this past Sunday, Mee Pee Wee C (aka “the wife”) and I were hungry, on Old Country Road, not interested in eating fast food, at a diner, or having Italian food, and spotted this restaurant known simply as Asian Buffet Restaurant, so we decided to give it a shot. It’s been my experience that there is a much better value with lunch than dinner at buffets, and I was hungry!
It was about 12:45 in the afternoon on a Sunday, and we pulled into the driveway at 276 W. Old County Road, Hicksville, NY, leading to a rather large parking lot. The entrance was in the rear, so it was convenient! Pricing was reasonable (11.95 weekends for lunch/ 8.95 mid-week, and for dinner 18.95 and 13.95). The restaurant was large, clean (even the bathrooms) and the buffet was enormous.
Included were numerous hot seafood dishes (shrimp, squid, fish, etc), several ribs dishes, many chicken dishes, and items such as egg rolls, spring rolls, etc. Another table offered more than a dozen varieties of sushi. Of course, the traditional noodle dishes (LoMein, etc.) were available as well. Then there was the area to keep the families with kids happy, that even offered pizza, fries, etc. And, there was a large salad area with salads, as well as seafood, fruits, etc. Another area offered several varieties of dessert, and still another with varieties of Hershey’s ice cream to scoop.
There was no limit, although the sign with the request to only take what you will eat was posted prominently!
Servers served beverages and water, and cleared your dirty dishes.
Now, for the critique. Was it the greatest food ever? No. Was it the worst? No. Was it fresh and tasty? Yes. The serving trays are continuously replenished and the staff was courteous and polite. If you asked me for a star rating, on the basis of 0 to 5, with 5 being the highest, I’d give it a 3.3 – 3.5.
Certainly worth the price for lunch, especially if you’re hungry, and want to eat a variety of different dishes. Prepared in several styles, from traditional to spicy, everything we ate was tasty, fresh, and we finished it all. The desserts (other than the ice cream and the roll cake) were not worth the calories, but you can always have some ice cream, jello, and fresh fruit.
I might not make a special trip, but I’d certainly go back for another lunch if I was in the area. Mee Pee Wee C says that she was very pleased with the quality and size of the ribs, but like at most buffets, you just end up eating too much. But, all in all, good family, casual fare.
