Sometimes Expectations Aren’t All That They’re Cracked Up To Be

But, then again, sometimes your expectations are a function of your, umm, expectations.  And if your expectations are what you expect from your visit to your local Chinese restaurant, then you will get what you expect.  For those who don’t venture far from home to get a taste of the Orient (which, by the way, we highly recommend).

Forewarned is fore armed.  We knew we were walking in to a very well established local Chinese restaurant that has served the Roslyn Heights community very well as evidenced by their being in existence for over 45 years (I do ponder though the thought that the lobster I ate this evening came from their grand opening.  Oops, did I just say that out loud?  Umm, more on that faux pas in the next paragraph).  They must be doing something right.  At least for their neighbors.  And the neighbors were out in force this Wednesday evening as almost all the tables were taken by the fine citizens of this this North Shore Gold Coast town.

I pause my review here to honor the mention I made in prior paragraph that I would expound upon the potential faux pas I committed in said paragraph.  As is well documented in the secret annals of the Mee Dynasty (Chapter 12, Paragraph 6, Subsection 3.1459), which speaks of the secret oath that each Mee holds dear to their heart and to whom would surely offer up their first born should it be violated (as if you didn’t know) that what’s said on crusade stays within the four walls of the shrine (that’s code for Chinese restaurant).  The tragic part of that is that I cannot share some of the secrets spoken of this evening.  Wait for the day my friend when we publish THOSE stories in an effort to keep our franchise alive (also known as jumping the shark).  But we will never ever resort to that, just as I wouldn’t take home the leftovers from this evenings dinner.

And now back to our review…

JKmenu

I offer for your consideration a picture of their menu.  For it matters not what you order.  You know what you’re going to get.  Enjoy it for what it’s worth.

And for whatever it’s worth to you, we had some:

  • Spare Ribs
  • House Wonton Soup
  • Lobster Cantonese
  • Eggplant with Sauteed Chicken
  • Orange Beef
  • Chicken Chow Mein

A blander selection of dishes we couldn’t have selected.  But, we figured it’s a neighborhood restaurant, let’s try to fit in with the locals and order what they would typically order.  As the old saying goes, we got what we asked for.

Other brother comments:

Major disappointment.  Aside from the pleasant banter from John, our waiter, I would have considered it a complete waste of time and energy

The good news:  It was exactly the way I expected it. Expectations were low.

Our fortunes:

People learn little from success, but much from failure

No one has a good enough memory to make a successful liar

Service to many leads to greatness (We had a great waiter.  He served.)

The starts appear every night in the sky.  All is well (Toilets flush.  Kina Hora!)

School is a building which has fours [sic] walls with tomorrow inside (See above comment)

Our ratings:

We live to review another Chinese restaurant.  Kina Hora!

Submitted for your, umm, consumption (please don’t take that literally!)
