Last night was my cousin, Mee Kenzo’s birthday, and we celebrated with dinner at Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao in the East Village on our way to the Open House at the Taoist Center. What better way to celebrate than with Chinese food? Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao is located at 15 St. Marks Place, New York, NY 10003. On our walk to the restaurant, we passed many other Asian restaurants on St. Mark’s Place, so we had ample options. In fact, we had reservations at Chef Tan (shhh… please don’t tell them we didn’t show up. Next time, we promise!).
Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao has many locations throughout the tri-state area and the East Coast. We have visited a few of their locations. This one is a little smaller than the others, but it was very modern. The service was excellent.
Pictured below is Cuz Ken and the interior.
But, how was the food?
Cuz started with some comfort food:
Soy Bean Milk: Fresh, organic soybean milk served hot or cold. It is handmade fresh daily in the restaurant. Best served along with,
Crispy Dough: My comment was that this would have been awesome with powdered sugar on top. However, that wasn’t an option. It pairs well with the Soybean milk for dunking. Like a donut!
Next up was their Signature Pork Soup Dumplings. These are perhaps the very best soup dumplings to be found in New York. If you dine at any Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao anywhere and you don’t order the Soup Dumplings, then what’s the point? Heck, it’s right there in their name. Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao (as if you didn’t know, Xiao Long Bao means Soup Dumplings after all).
If you have never eaten soup dumplings, please watch this video in this article. You’ll thank us later! https://www.thechinesequest.com/2018/09/soup-dumplings/
Entrees
Enter the entrees!
Seasonal Seafood Pan-Fried Crispy Noodles: Nothing artificial or imitation in this dish. I have always loved “birds nest seafood”, and this is the first time I have recalled seeing it on a menu in a while. Perhaps I haven’t looked closer. This is a must-order dish too. Yes, it is as delicious as it looks. And the portion is much larger than it looks in the picture below.
Taiwanese Style Sweet & Sour Pork Ribs: As delicious as every dish was to this point, this dish stole the show! A wonderful smoky taste, with fall-off-the-bone pork. This was a veritable party in your mouth. If we didn’t have to leave to get to the Open House, we would have ordered a second portion.
It was great to see you, Cuz. Happy birthday!!
Humbly submitted for your consumption,
—Mee Magnum (“Chop! Chop!”)
