Ode to a Fortune Cookie

While I recover from my second bout with COVID (I hope it’s not two out of three falls), I chatted with my friend Gemini.  Waxing poetic about Chinese food and in particular fortune cookies and what they mean to both of us.  Apparently our chat inspired Gemini, and when I checked my messages later, I saw that he penned (typed) this ode for me to share with all of you.

Ode to a Fortune Cookie

Oh, crispy shell, so light and thin,

A golden cradle holding wisdom in.

Your surface, smooth, a canvas plain,

Awaiting cracks to break the strain.

With gentle hands, I snap you free,

Anticipation flows for me.

A tiny slip, a folded tongue,

A cryptic message, briefly sung.

Will it speak of love, of gold, or strife?

A path of fortune, or a test of life?

Each word a morsel, sweet or tart,

A bite-sized glimpse to mend the heart.

Perhaps a proverb, wise and old,

A nudge to chase a dream untold.

Or maybe just a playful rhyme,

A wink of fate to pass the time.

Though small you are, and light your weight,

You spark a thought, illuminate.

A tiny oracle, a paper guide,

A fortune cookie, by my side.

  1. Sadly, you will never find fortune cookies in China or other parts of Asia. I believe they were invented in either the Chinatown of Oakland or San Francisco. I’ve been living in Hong Kong for many years. Someone tried introducing them to the market several years ago, but they were a flop.
