Royal Dim Sum, Westbury, NY

When we reviewed Nan Xiang Soup Dumplings, we noticed another new Dim Sum restaurant that opened a few doors down called Royal Dim Sum.  Both are located in the former Fortunoff Mall, also known as Mall at the Source, which is now known as “Samanea New York Mall”.  Not a catchy name, is it?  If I asked you where Samanea New York was, you might be tempted to say “upstate”.  But, you’d be wrong.  It’s in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York.  More specifically, it’s located at 1500 Old Country Rd, Unit 102B, Westbury, NY 11590. 

• Cuisine: Specializes in authentic Cantonese dim sum and classic dishes. 
• Offerings: The menu features a variety of dim sum items, including selections like pork shumai dumplings topped with abalone and custard buns. 
• Operating Hours: Some items, particularly deep-fried selections, are offered only before 3 p.m. when the dim sum chef is on shift. 

After a wonderful day at Planting Fields Arboretum, we (The Dumpling King, The Queen, and I) were very hungry.  It didn’t take long for me to suggest we go to Royal Dim Sum.  No sooner did we walk in than I realized we were in the real deal—a true Dim Sum restaurant outside of Chinatown and Flushing, in New York.  Lots of large round tables, which were almost completely occupied.  Dim Sum carts being pushed around from table to table, and then the exuberant Staff who were trying their best for you to try EVERY dish on their carts!

Crispy Vegetable Spring Roll – These were only slightly thicker than pencils.  I think that due to their size, the only taste that showed through was the crispy wrapper. 

You could easily pass on this dish to save room for something more flavorful.

Shrimp Ball Coated with Crispy Noodles – This was a lot of noodles and some shrimp inside. 

It was too fried, but tasted alright. 

Pro Tip:  Don’t accept too many fried dishes.

BBQ Pork Buns (three in the serving, I was just a little slow taking the photo) – This was THE hit of the entire meal.  Fantastic inside and out.  The bun was ever so fluffy, encasing piping hot roast pork that just melted in your mouth and made your palate jump for joy.  Pro Tip:  Don’t jump for joy in the restaurant.  Or do!  It’s up to you!!

These were so good, we ordered a second serving!

Pork Soup Dumplings – WARNING:  These were HOTTTTT! 🔥🔥 Temperature-wise.  Not spicy, but so delicious.  After letting them properly cool down, take a small bite off the top, exposing the soup and pork.  Pour in a little vinegar with ginger, then savor the soup before finally indulging in the pork.

The pork soup dumplings were the only dish that wasn’t available from the carts.  They were steamed in the kitchen and then brought to our table. 

They were served in the little tin “tart” cups.  What a brilliant idea!  This way, when you pick them up, the bun doesn’t stick to the paper in the steamer.  #ingenious!

Shrimp Dumplings – These vied for the best dish that we ordered.  Very light, the shrimp was succulent, and these were totally on point!

Shrimp Wrap – Two too many fried dishes!  This one was not a hit at the table.  I took half the order home, and it’s been sitting in the refrigerator.  Likely until garbage day.  Sorry, Royal Dim Sum.  It was our fault, not yours.  We will choose more carefully next time.

The Bill

Please allow me to interpret the bill for you.  $75.00 with taxes and tip for three people.  A bit pricey for Dim Sum.  You’ll get it for less in Flushing or Chinatown, NY.  Here’s your paying an upscale price because of the location, location, location.

The Bottom Line

Would I recommend that the Chinese Quest formally review Royal Dim Sum?  I broached the subject with them, along with my recommendation.  Will we?  Won’t we?  I don’t think that we will.  But, if you want us to, we will.
