It seems that lately, every time I am hungry when I am out of the house, my mind ignores the usual fast-food options (think hamburgers) and turns to Chinese food. A few days ago, it was Panda Express. Yesterday it was MÓGŪ Modern Chinese Kitchen. Waze told me that the nearest MÓGŪ to where I was at that moment was at 7930 Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury, NY 11797.
MÓGŪ Modern Chinese Kitchen has subtly redefined the Chinese dining landscape in Woodbury, NY, with a bold commitment to health, cleanliness, and flavor. As soon as you enter, you’re struck by the pristine atmosphere—staff are frequently seen cleaning, ensuring the space feels as fresh as the day they opened.
A Menu for the Modern Diner
MÓGŪ’s menu distances itself from the cliché of greasy Chinese takeout. Using innovative smart-cooking and air-baking techniques instead of deep frying, MÓGŪ offers a diverse menu with Asian-inspired classics—think sesame chicken, lo mein, and pork wontons—done lighter but just as satisfying. Signature dishes like Bang Bang Rice, General Tso’s Chicken, and sesame chicken arrive with perfectly cooked proteins and soulful yet health-conscious sauces. Portions are generous, and prices are reasonable for the quality you receive.
Health Without Sacrificing Flavor
The kitchen’s air-fried and steamed approach yields food that is both tasty and never overly oily, and the sauces are thoughtfully balanced—not too sweet or heavy. Mini pork wontons and eggrolls have become hits, and Mogu’s “Not-So Fried Rice” and noodle options deliver both comfort and nutrition. For those who crave the classics, dishes such as hot and sour soup and classic lo mein are elevated in freshness and presentation.
I had a craving for “Hi Lo Mein with Shrimp“. The first thing that struck my eye was the size of the shrimp. JUMBO shrimp. And they were amazingly good. So much better than the shrimpy shrimp I have had at other restaurants. Though I really liked the shrimp in the lo mein that I recently had at Moo Shu (located in Little Neck, NY. You can read my review by clicking here), these shrimp blew those shrimp out of the ocean.
Customer Experience: A Notable Step Up
Service at MÓGŪ consistently earns praise. As I have experienced on both of my visits to MÓGŪ, the staff are helpful and happy to explain the concept to newcomers. The modern fast-casual vibe—think Chipotle meets Chinese—is clean, bright, and organized, making in-person and online ordering quick and simple. Takeout and catering services receive high marks for reliability and quality.
A Few Points of Critique
No restaurant is perfect, and MÓGŪ isn’t immune to occasional critiques. I have read that some guests feel the food veers more toward Chinese-American fusion than “authentic” Chinese, and a few noted minor menu limitations or upcharges for certain add-ons. Yet among discerning diners, Mogu’s dedication to fresh, healthy cooking and vibrant flavors wins out.
The Verdict
For those seeking a modern, health-conscious interpretation of Chinese cuisine without sacrificing flavor, MÓGŪ Modern Chinese Kitchen is a stellar choice. This isn’t your typical takeout joint—it’s a forward-thinking kitchen where both your taste buds and your health can rejoice.
As I was leaving, one of the signs lit up BBQ Spare Ribs. Every time I have been there, I forget they serve them, and THOSE would be the ultimate factor in my recommendation. I hope I don’t forget them the next time I go to MÓGŪ. I can’t wait! I’ll write about that experience.
