People have been hounding me to try the famous #6, Wonton with Hot (Chili) Sauce, since the day that White Bear opened a few months ago. For some reason, I hesitated. Until today. I was told IYKYK (If You Know, You Know). I like to know. Now I know.
White Bear is located at 6a Bond Street, Great Neck Plaza, NY 11021.
This is a sister location to their famous location in downtown Flushing, NY (on Prince Street, just south of Roosevelt Avenue), which has been there forever, and there is usually a line of people ordering takeout. Neither restaurant offers dining in options (if you don’t count the counter and a few chairs at the Great Neck Plaza location.
Menu options are VERY limited. Dining hours even more so. They close at 7:00 PM! I’ve been told that towards the end of the day, they often sell out of certain items.
I was told there was ONE dish that I had to order. Apparently, it’s so popular, they put it on the menu FOUR times! It’s the famous #6 Wonton with Hot (Chili) Sauce (12 pieces). So, I did.
Everything, it seems, but the kitchen sink is thrown into this dish. I feared it was going to be too spicy. It wasn’t. Though it cleared up my sinuses very nicely.
However, I will not be of the populist opinion. I wouldn’t order it again. I don’t know. I can’t put my chopsticks on it. But it wasn’t my cup of tea, and I likely won’t be ordering from them again. I’m sorry to cast my dissenting vote. YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary).
I do encourage you to try it for yourself (this, or other dishes on the menu), and please feel free to post your comments below. Perhaps you’ll get me to change my mind. Maybe.
Humbly submitted for your consumption,
—Mee Magnum (“Chop! Chop!”)
