LOL BBQ & Bar, recently opened at 66 Middle Neck Road, Great Neck, NY 11021. It’s where Chinese Street Food meets Cumin. Being Dumpling King Approved, I recently went with four former co-workers, for a long overdue reunion. This turned out to be a great choice as a splendid time, and good food, was had by all.
And a bar, as promised in the name, at the back with a marble(?) top and stools.
Happy Hour runs from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM weekdays, so we just had enough time to order a round (or two!) at the bar (Happy Hour prices are valid only at the Bar). Wanting a
Pro Tip: Skewers at the bar are only $2.00 and up, saving a $1.00 of the regular menu. Happy Hour cocktails are $9.00. Sit at the bar and enjoy good convo with the server, and watch the game on the large screen TV’s behind the bar.
The Menu
Pro Tip: You would think the skewers didn’t have much proteins on them, and before you know it, you have over-ordered.
While we waited for our food to arrive, we got to catch up with each other and enjoy an appetizer of Homemade Taro Chips with Garlic Aioli, which was incredibly light and delicious, and an order of Fried Mini Bun (not pictured). These were a wonderful texture, but pretty tasteless. I didn’t use the sauce that came with it.
Our Order
Set upon our table was a homemade warmer covered in aluminum foil, it contained half a dozen tealight candles to keep your skewers warm. Nice touch!
- Beef Skewers
- Chicken Skewers
- Lamb Skewers
- Jumbo Shrimp Skewers
- Tofu Skewers
- Corn on the cob (not pictured) – everyone was filling up on the skewers (we ordered a LOT!), so this was put into the doggy bag along with eight or so leftover skewers.
- Vegetable Fried Rice (not pictured) – this was delicious, albeit a small portion that we managed to share five ways.
By this time, our bellies were all quite full, and the conversation started to wind down. We could have talked for another hour, but nothing else was going to find it’s way into our mouths.
Bottom Line
All of the dishes were moist, tender, and spiced with cumin. If you don’t like cumin, you’re not going to like this restaurant. If you like cumin, and your food on the spicy side of mild, you’re going to love LOL BBQ & Grill.
We got the bill, settled up, and realized that our eyes were much larger than our stomach as witnessed by all of the leftovers we took home. Keep your eye on the prize, order a few different dishes. You can always add to the order!
Humbly submitted for your consumption,
—Mee Magnum (“Chop! Chop!”)
