The confetti has settled, the ball has dropped in Times Square, and we have officially entered 2026. According to the Gregorian calendar, it’s a new year. According to our stomachs, it’s just another 365 days to find the perfect soup dumpling.
Every year, people resolve to “eat less” or “cut carbs.” Here at The Chinese Quest, we believe those resolutions are not only quitters’ talk but fundamentally against the laws of nature. Why eat less when there are still menus in Queens we haven’t translated yet?
2026 is shaping up to be a year of bold flavors. Culinary forecasters are predicting a rise in “swangy” (sweet and tangy) profiles and a return to hyper-regional authenticity. So, put down that kale smoothie and pick up your chopsticks. Here are the official Chinese Quest Resolutions for 2026.
1. Venture Beyond the Cantonese Curtain
We all love a good Wonton Soup and General Tso’s (don’t deny it), but 2026 is the year we dive deeper into the map. If your regular takeout order hasn’t changed since 2024, you’re doing it wrong.
The Resolution: Try a regional cuisine you’ve never had before. Long Island and NYC are exploding with options beyond the standard Cantonese and Sichuan fare. Have you tried the sour-spicy funk of Guizhou cuisine? What about the lamb-heavy, cumin-dusted dishes of Xi’an? Or the delicate, seafood-centric flavors of Fujian? This year, let’s promise to eat something that requires a Google search to identify.
2. Master the “Slurp” (Without the Splatter)
There is a dignity to eating Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings). It requires the precision of a surgeon and the patience of a saint. Too fast? You burn your tongue. Too rough? You puncture the skin and lose that precious broth to the steamer basket—a tragedy in three acts.
The Resolution: Perfect your soup dumpling technique. No more wasted broth. No more stained shirts. This is the year we respect the dumpling. Dip, place on spoon, nip the top, sip the broth, enjoy the bliss. If you aren’t eating them at least once a month, are you even on a Quest?
3. The “No Fork” Policy
We’ve been lenient in the past. We understand that sometimes, those slippery flat noodles are hard to wrangle. But we are professionals. We are Questers.
The Resolution: 2026 is the year of 100% Chopstick Proficiency. If you are eating at a round table with a Lazy Susan, and you ask for a fork, you are officially killing the vibe. Practice on peanuts. Practice on slippery mushrooms. If you can pick up a single grain of rice, you have ascended.
4. Find the “Hidden Gem” Before TikTok Does
The internet ruins everything. One minute, you have a quiet spot in Flushing where the aunties know your order; the next, there’s a line of influencers with ring lights outside the door.
The Resolution: Scout a new restaurant before it goes viral. Get in your car, drive to a strip mall you’ve never visited, and look for the place with the roasted ducks hanging in the window and a menu that’s barely in English. Be the Columbus of culinary delights (but, you know, nicer). Report back to the Quest. We need to know.
5. Bring a New “Mee” into the Fold
Sharing a meal is the ultimate bonding experience. The lazy susan is a wheel of friendship.
The Resolution: Introduce someone new to real Chinese food. Take that friend who thinks Panda Express is the pinnacle of Asian cuisine and bring them to a proper dim sum hall. Watch their eyes widen as the carts roll by. Watch them recoil—then delight—at the texture of a chicken foot. Convert them. We need more soldiers in the army of appetite.
