O-AtoZChallengeThe Orient means the East. It is a traditional designation for anything that belongs to the Eastern world.  The term “Orient” derives from the Latin word oriens meaning “east” (literally “rising”). The use of the word “rising” refers to the east because that is where the sun rises.  The adjectival term Oriental has been used by the West to mean cultures, peoples, countries, and goods from the Orient. “Oriental” generally means “eastern”. It is a traditional designation (especially when capitalized) for anything belonging to the Orient or “East” (for Asia), and especially of its Eastern culture.

In the United States, “Oriental” is often considered an antiquated, pejorative, and disparaging term.  But, to The Chinese Quest, “Orient” refers to something completely different.  The Orient, and Orient Odyssey are two Chinese restaurants that we have reviewed that both carry incredible significance to us on our Quest.

The-Orient-BethpageThe Orient, in Bethpage, NY, and not in “the East”, was the very first Chinese restaurant that we officially reviewed.  The Orient came highly recommended as an authentic Chinese restaurant.  And The Orient did not disappoint!  In a strip mall, the Orient has undergone a complete renovation since we wrote our review.  At the time of our review they didn’t have a liquor license, so we enjoyed the benefits of bringing our own wine.  Hopefully nothing has changed in the quality of their food.  We will definitely have to revisit The Orient again  Without a doubt, The Orient served THE best House Wonton Soup that we’ve ever had the privilege to enjoy.  The other most notable ingredient we remember so fondly was their lotus root.  Chinese really do do vegetables so well!  Go enjoy a taste of The Orient if you’re in the Bethpage area.  And, if you’re not, it’s definitely worth the trip!

Orient-Odyssey-JerichoOrient Odyssey, in Jericho, NY is the sister restaurant of The Orient.  Orient Odyssey serves Hong Kong Style Seafood.  After a year’s wait while they built the restaurant, we came to review Orient Odyssey just two weeks after they opened their doors.  The buzz was still going strong.  When we got there as the restaurant was PACKED!  And it was a Wednesday night.  Didn’t everyone know it was “Wednesday is Sundae at Carvel“?  Perhaps that was their destinations after dinner.  Outside of Flushing, this is the only Chinese restaurant that we have been to that had a line of people waiting to get in!

Orient Odyssey was extra special to The Chinese Quest, as Newsday sent a videographer to memorialize this Quest.   I’m not sure if Oscar’s are awaiting us next year, but all Mee can say is, thank you to Newsday.  We are grateful for your incredible editing skills and for the opportunity to be showcased in the amazing two page full color article you wrote about us that was published February 19, 2015, and now we are on video too!

We hope you’ll enjoy watching this video as much as we enjoyed being a part of it!  For the first time, The Chinese Quest appears on video:

Very humbly submitted for your consumption,

Mee Magnum (“Chop!  Chop!”)
