Drink Wine – Improve Your Memory

Improve MemorySome drink to forget; Some drink to enjoy.  We like to mix wine with our Chinese cuisine.  Did you know that drinking wine can improve your memory?  I had read about a study performed on the subject a few months ago.  But, I forgot about it until I was reminded of it a few days ago!  How can that be if I say we like wine and are now postulating that drinking wine can improve your memory?  Well, apparently my problem is that I prefer white wine.  And improved memory comes from Resveratrol, which is a compound found the skins of red grapes.  No wonder!

The discovery was found sort of by accident.  It was a study that was performed to observe the effects of resvaratrol on overweight people (eat enough Chinese food like we do, and we might fall in to THAT category soon.   Umm, refill please!).  Before and after the six-month study, participants gave blood samples, had their brains scanned, and took a memory test.

red wineDuring the study, half the volunteers were given 200 milligrams of resveratrol a day, while the other half were given a placebo.  I’m making a bold assumption that they remembered which half got which! 😉

The study found that those who took the resveratrol supplements had better short-term recall and more connections among brain areas involved in memory than those who took a placebo.  The blood tests showed reduced levels of a blood sugar marker in the people who took resveratrol, which suggests that sugar metabolism may be linked to brain connectivity and memory.  So there you have it!

But wait, later a  study from the John Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, found that resveratrol’s health benefits are a “myth”.

You know what I say, if it tastes good it and you enjoy you it… you’ll drink to forget, and all of a sudden you’ll forget all those bad memories.  Hence, improving your memory!  Or at least making your memories more pleasant (Results can NOT be guaranteed the next morning 😉 ).

Humbly submitted for your approval,

Mee Magnum (“Chop!  Chop!”)
