[REVIEW] Orchid, Garden City

Faded Bloom

Disappointment is all I can say.  I’m going to post lots of pictures, because I don’t have a lot of words to share.  I have been here once before, and the food was good.  This time, we came as Mee’s, and this Mee was disappointed (and as the numerical reviews will attest so were the other Mee’s.

Orchid is located in Garden City at 730 Franklin Ave.

You park in the back (enter either via Stewart Avenue, or on 7th Avenue (heading west off of Steward Avenue).

You then enter and walk down the stairs.  The restaurant is quite nicely decorated.

The sign in the front (on Stewart Avenue) is a little bit easier to read, but it’s best to know where you are going.  A good GPS is priceless.

orchid1The neon sign over the door gives it away too.  Which, I am assuming at night time is lit to make it easier to find.

That being said, when you walk down the stairs, you’ll see a nice display of oriental art.  The restaurant itself is large.  The last time I was there the place was packed.  It might have been a Friday night rather than the Tuesday night that we visited it. And, it’s also July 4th week so perhaps that kept the crowds at bay.

Are you getting the idea I’m writing a lot of fluff because I don’t want to talk about the food?

Well, the Mai Tai’s were good.  I even posted a picture of mine.  And, Cousin Soo-Zee’s chop sticks looked mighty nice on our table!

Alright, I’ve digressed enough.  We started with our standard order of spare ribs.  To me they looked nice, smelled nice, tasted ok… albeit, in my humble opinion a little dry. The steamed dumplings that were served along with the spare ribs were dreadful.

We then asked the waiter to serve us an authentic Chinese meal.  He said everything on the menu is authentic.  So we said, give us your best shot (without divulging that we were writing a review).  So, we were served Orange Beef (I don’t think that’s really authentic, do you?)… it was tasty, crispy, but not in the least bit spicy.  There was also a chicken dish that did have some spice.  The house special fried rice was extremely bland, and nothing very special.  Lastly we had a seafood dish, seafood nest.  Umm, hmm, the shrimp and the scallops were ok.  The nest might have really been made out or twigs.

Mee Tsu Yan did want to write up this review, so the fewer words I say the better.

Here’s our numeric analysis of dinner:

  2. I neglected to mention in my review that when the bill came I was in the bathroom (perhaps that’s too much information, sorry!)… they asked me to guess the amount. My guess was almost exactly HALF what the bill actually was. Oye Vey!
