Sometimes Two Wong’s CAN Make it Right

[Edit 2/26/2015:  Sadly, I must report that Wong’s Noodle House is no longer in business.  I made the grim discovery this evening as I drove past]

I must admit, I wasn’t expecting much when we walked in.  The restaurant was highly recommended.  But, that was a recommendation based on an opinion dated two years ago. PRIOR to a change of ownership.

Four of the Mee’s present.  Unfortunately V. Stoogas could not join us this evening, but we look forward to dining with him again soon.

wnl1Wong’s Noodle House is located at, just north of the railroad tracks at:

98 Mineola Blvd.

Mineola, NY 11501

When we walked in, there was only one other table occupied.  It appears it’s mostly a take out restaurant.  And they do most of their business during lunch hours due to the proximity of Winthrop Hospital just a  few blocks away.

No sooner did we walk in, when the other table left.  I’m sure it was just a coincidence.  Most the meal we ate in the “solitude” of our own camaraderie and good spirits.  The spirits were accentuated by some fine BYOB Pinot Grigot (always scores bonus Jew Appeal points).   They did put it on ice for us.  Nicely done!

We left it to our waiter to serve us an authentic Chinese meal, with the only caveat that we wanted spare ribs as appetizers.

This is what we were served:

  • wnl3Spare Ribs
  • Basil Chicken
  • Crispy Beef
  • Triple Crown
  • Shredded Pork w/Scallions
  • Singapore Style Mei Fun Noodles

The spare ribs were out of this world.  My personal favorite from all the restaurants we’ve eaten at!  The glaze was just right.  Nice combination of sweet and BBQ’ie (I like making up my own words when real words just don’t capture the true essence of what I’m trying to describe).

The entree portions were a little on the small side, and after we completely devoured all four we were still left wanting for more (always a good sign!).  So, we asked ordered the Singapore Style Mei Fun Noodles (the only dish aside from the spare ribs that we personally requested).  We asked it to be a little spicy.  And, it was more than a little spicy.  The other dishes were on the bland, but tasty side.  Especially the Triple Crown.   The shrimp in the Triple Crown offering was completely tasteless.  The scallops had a nice kick and were the best of that offering.

My favorite dish was the crispy beef.  Nice and crispy like, extremely tasty (akin to the spare ribs), yet not dry at all.  A home run!

The basil chicken was forgettable.  The shredded pork very good.  Though a small serving.

Dinner was completed with a juicy orange, and of course the offering of the fortune cookies with our check (reasonably priced.  Additional Jew Appeal Points).

Here were our fortunes:

“Write your life’s events in a journal.”  (Kind of like our blog, eh? 😉 )

“Fear is interest paid on a debt you may not owe”  (Very profound!)

“No one has a good enough memory to make a successful liar”

“Everything is possible.  Just not probable”  (What a friggin’ downer!)

  1. Wong’s is my jam! Next time you HAVE TO try their noodle soups. They are cheap and delicious. Also, along with an egg roll for dipping, fill you up to where you won’t need anything else. Their pork katsu soup with veggies and lo mein noddles is my favorite. The shredded pork and picked cabbage and the wonton with huge pieces of pork are also great! I haven’t seen other restaurant on LI do noodle soups like this. There is always the random restaurant with their take on Yaka Mein but its usually just noodles and broth. This place does it right. Ok, now I’m hungry. *bows*

  2. I forgot to thank our Cousin Soo Zee, for bringing the Mee’s back five pair of chopsticks for use on our Quest. We used them last night for the first time, and it made the meal just that much more delicious!

    Thank you again, Soo Zee!

  3. Surprisingly (now) we did NOT go for Carvel Ice Cream after dinner. It didn’t even come up in conversation. I think it’s because of two reasons. The first is that I had to get home. The second was that the food wasn’t all that spicy, so we didn’t need ice cream to chill our palates.

It also came up in dinner conversation (at least the part that can be shared in a public forum) that not only will Tsu Yan post his review over the weekend, but also Gonzi Biao wants to post (his first) a review as well (or some other philosophical treatise. Either way, I’m looking forward to his first offering, much like a well anticipated meal. I’ve been teased with an appetizer. Now bring on the main dish!)
