Catering to the well heeled clientele of the Gold Coast of Long Island, Pearl East doesn’t disappoint. Last night we were treated like royalty, and made to feel extra special.

There was Valet Parking when you pulled up. What Jew doesn’t like to be waited on like that?
The Restaurant, though not visually appealing from the outside, presented quite a different ambiance on the inside.
Pure opulence, class, quality, gilt, and more. Nicely done.
We were well taken care of by the owners and Managers. In fact, when a better table opened up, they insisted we move there. For the location of the restaurant, there was a fair number of Asians dining, which I wasn’t expecting.
After ordering our standard fare of Spare Ribs and House Wonton Soup (trying to standardize these appetizers across restaurants to compare apples, wontons?, to apples), we left the rest of our faire up to Kathy. We asked for an authentic Chinese dinner. I don’t think some of the intricate and ornamental presentation is typical of traditional Chinese food, we were impressed by the level of detail and artistry in the presentation.
The ribs looked and smelled just the way I liked them, and they were plenty meaty. The House Wonton Soup was served individually, and was a nice mixture of wontons, pork slices, shrimp, greens, lotus root(?), and a few other ingredients.
Interestingly enough we weren’t given rice to accompany our meals. And there was knives, and forks, rather than chop sticks at each setting, along with homemade thin chow mein noodles, tea was served and there was sugar, splenda, and “sweet and low” at the table – again, not what you’d expect to see at an “Authentic” Chinese restaurant – but, clearly they had to cater to the Gold Coast palate and expectations.
What Kathy ordered for us was:
- Crispy Rice Paper Shrimp Roll w/ Grand Marnier Sauce
- Barbequed Jumbo Shrimp served with Bok Choi
- Free Range Chicken w/ Spices:
- Lobster in XO Sauce w/Sticky Rice
- Sauteed snow pea leaves
- Sea Bass w/Pinenuts:
- Sea Food Rice Cake
- Caramel Cone Ice Cream / Pineapple / Rice Bean Pastry (Sadly I had to leave prior to dessert and before the check came… lucky for mee, I contributed before the check came, or I would have had to dig deeper in to pocket! I owe you guys!)
Mee Tsu Yan said he was going to write a review on his own, which should come out in a few days.
Just to put in my two cents now, I felt that the dishes weren’t very spicy (it was Cantonese, so that wasn’t unexpected). Most of the dishes were salty (though I didn’t realize just how salty until I got home and my mouth felt as dry as the Egyptian desert). The Sea Bass was without a doubt my favorite offering. The lobster was good, but the meat lacked a little bit of flavor). The presentation of all the dishes was top notch, and the service was superlative.
All in all a most pleasant experience. Be prepared though to spend a Kings randsom on dinner. This was by far the most expensive dinner we’ve had to date!
By the way, it’s over an hour after we ate, and I’m NOT hungry!
